Depression Therapy New York
Depression affects what you think, feel, and do. Depression can cause feelings of hopelessness and a lack of motivation, among other negative feelings.
Loss of interest, lack of enjoyment, physical exhaustion and even physical pain are all associated with depression. Because of this it can be hard to have hope or see a way out. But depression is a treatable illness, and you don’t need to struggle alone.
What is Depression Therapy?
Depression Symptoms
Depressed mood – feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most of the day, nearly every day
Diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities
Weight loss or gain
Sleeping too little or too much
Being so restless or moving so slowly that others notice
Fatigue or loss of energy
Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Trouble concentrating
Thoughts about death or suicide
There are several kinds of depression so if you have some of these symptoms and they last at least two weeks, you may want to consult with a professional about what type of depression you might have.
Depression therapy is the treatment of a category of depressive disorders. Depression is more than sadness, although sadness is one symptom. Depression and sadness are distinct from the grief that commonly follows loss.
Types of Depression
There are several types of depression, varying in symptom presentation and intensity. For example, Major Depressive Disorder MDD is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed. This type of depression can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life, while Persistent Depressive Disorder, PDD, or dysthymia, is a chronic form of depression that lasts for two years or more, and involves a continuous low mood and feelings of hopelessness. The symptoms, however, are generally less severe than those of MDD. Other types of depression include Postpartum Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder and the depressive episodes that make up Bipolar Disorder.
Treatment for Depression
Treatment for depression typically includes a combination of talk therapy and medication, but I work with many people who either do not wish to take medications such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers, or whose goal is to reduce or eliminate medication. While they can help regulate the chemicals in your brain, there are many forms of depression that require just lifestyle changes for some people to feel better. Others find medication helpful for providing relief from symptoms. Regardless of your situation, medication alone usually isn’t the answer to depression.
Many approaches have been proven to help with depression, but every study shows that the therapeutic relationship is the biggest predictor of treatment success. Find someone you can talk to who makes you feel seen, heard and less alone.
