ADHD Therapy

Brooklyn New York

cosmic art representing the potential healing effects of adhd therapy

If you’re ready to improve your focus, productivity, and get results, then you’ve landed in the right place.

Outwardly, you’re a success by most standards. You navigate the complexities of New York City, you hold down a demanding job, and you’re the kind of person people rely on.

But if we looked inside your brain, it might look like a browser with 47 tabs open, half of them frozen.

Living with ADHD in NYC is a double-edged sword. The city provides the dopamine hits and novelty your brain craves, but the sensory overload and relentless pace can also leave you in a state of paralysis. You might find yourself:

  • Procrastinating until the panic sets in, relying on adrenaline to finish work at 2 AM.

  • Masking constantly, working twice as hard to appear “normal” and organized.

  • Feeling shame about the “easy” things—like laundry, texts, or being on time—that seem impossible for you.

Adult ADHD and the Missed Childhood Diagnosis

As kids, adults with ADHD were the kind of kids that were forgetful, spacey, constantly talking and losing or misplacing things. Whether they had a lot of friends or not, underneath they felt like the other kids played by rules they weren’t taught.

One reason ADHD often goes undetected is because they weren’t necessarily hyper children. They often daydreamed in class and dissociated because school felt stressful, simultaneously overwhelming and underwhelming.

If their parents set a disciplined schedule of studying and tutoring, many of the signs may have been missed, while the child shut down their own body to cope and conform to the expected standards. As a result, many earned good grades and were proud of their work ethic. But, maybe they noticed it took much more time to do their work than everyone else, or that they felt uncomfortable and unwell sitting for hours at a time trying to focus.

They were often anxious, fearful and filled with shame about failing so they spent a lot of time studying, worrying, and preparing. They performed well in high school and college and even went to graduate school or landed prestigious jobs. But it was achieved at a high cost.

They pushed through for many years and have achieved a lot of success. But, with changes, transitions, or extra responsibilities, people often come to points where they find that their previous coping strategies are starting to fail, and they need long-term solutions that will work.

What is ADHD Therapy?

ADHD is a common and complex neurodevelopment syndrome leading to impairments of brain function, particularly the self-management system of the brain responsible for attention, impulse control and executive functions like planning and organization. A system of mostly unconscious operations, these impairments are situationally variable, and may significantly interfere with functioning in many aspects of daily life.

ADHD is not about a lack of intelligence, motivation or even poor parenting. It is a neurodevelopmental syndrome that impacts daily life in difficulties with stuff like organization, time management, and self-regulation, leading to struggles with completing tasks, following instructions, and maintaining relationships.

At The Consultation Room having ADHD just means that the way the brain functions is different from the way our culture teaches us it should function, which is a limited and misunderstood perspective. Taking a strength based approach, my ADHD counseling New York helps you regain power over your narrative and build a life that suits who you are.

The Consultation Room Approach to ADHD therapy New York

Treatment plans at The Consultation Room are highly tailored, but generally involve a combination of therapy and coaching, so you develop practical skills while addressing emotions, and the deeper stories associated with your struggles.

We’ll begin with a comprehensive assessment to understand your history, challenges, and goals. We’ll focus on your top priorities helping you understand and articulate yourself, so you can overcome your challenges to achieve your goals.

Differences Between Therapy & Coaching for ADHD

ADHD therapy helps manage and overcome challenges that neurodivergence can have on self esteem, relationships, communication, world view and more in love, work or school. In therapy we talk about issues related to self-worth, confidence and self-acceptance. We work to understand the influence of ADHD on personal and professional relationships, and how to create healthier, more nourishing connections. Together we examine things like how communication is impacted by ADHD and work toward clearer expression and more fulfilling interpersonal interactions. In therapy people also develop a deeper understanding of how their perception and reactions to the world are shaped by their ADHD, so they can better navigate emotional challenges as they arise.

ADHD coaching supports people to more effectively manage symptoms and achieve their goals. ADHD coaching provides guidance, support, and psychoeducation to help clients develop practical strategies for success. When ADHD is decreasing your effectiveness in various areas of your life, coaching sessions can help gain understanding and insight about the ways neurodivergence impacts daily functioning, helping you recognize the limitations and strengths that come with ADHD.

Coaching helps you learn behavioral strategies and organizational systems, such as time blocking, that help you prioritize. Implementing the practical strategies with the support of a coach will alleviate pressure by instilling confidence that you have the skills to be effective each day. An ADHD coach can also work with family members to help them understand and support their loved one.

At The Consultation Room, coaching sessions are tracked and progress toward goals is regularly reviewed. Together we’ll discuss an agenda for the current session, address obstacles, and develop practical strategies to make the most progress. Each session builds on the previous one, creating steady, measurable progress toward change.

If you’re unsure if you need ADHD therapy or coaching, or you just want to learn more about what could be most helpful for you, please schedule a free, no pressure consultation where we can talk more about your struggles, and you can learn more about my approach to supporting people with ADHD.

The Three Types of ADHD

  1. Combined Inattentive and Hyperactive/Impulsive Type ADHD:

People with this type of ADHD tend to predominately feel more energy in their body, experience restlessness and the need to be “on the go”; and have difficulty sitting or standing still and waiting. Often they may say or do things impulsively blurt out answers or interrupt others in conversation.

  2. Hyperactive/Impulsive Type ADHD:

People with inattentive type of ADHD struggle primarily with getting started on tasks, staying organized, staying on-task, forgetfulness, loss of time, difficulty managing emotions, and zoning out.

  3. Inattentive Type ADHD:

A combination of both types with equal presentation of each.
