ADHD Therapy in Denver, CO
At The Consultation Room, the goal of ADHD treatment Denver is to understand your diagnosis as strength, not shame.
You might struggle with paying attention, keeping organized, feeling restless, feeling overwhelmed, feeling as though you are missing something, and maybe feeling like you’re never good enough. You may feel misunderstood, or like you're expected to be someone you're not.
These are just a few experiences people in need of ADHD counseling may share. There’s much more to the story, to your story.
What is ADHD Therapy?
ADHD is a common and complex neurodevelopment syndrome leading to impairments of brain function, particularly the self-management system of the brain responsible for attention, impulse control and executive functions like planning and organization. A system of mostly unconscious operations, these impairments are situationally variable and may significantly interfere with functioning in many aspects of daily life.
At The Consultation Room having ADHD just means that the way the brain functions is different from the way our culture teaches us it should function, which is a limited and misunderstood perspective. I take a strength based approach toward neurodivergent therapy Denver.

Differences Between Therapy & Coaching for ADHD
ADHD therapy helps manage and overcome challenges that neurodivergence can have on self esteem, relationships, communication, world view and more in love, work or school. In therapy we talk about issues related to self-worth, confidence and self-acceptance. We work to understand the influence of ADHD on personal and professional relationships, and how to create healthier, more nourishing connections. Together we examine things like how communication is impacted by ADHD and work toward clearer expression and more fulfilling interpersonal interactions. In therapy people also develop a deeper understanding of how their perception and reactions to the world are shaped by their ADHD, so they can better navigate emotional challenges as they arise.
ADHD coaching supports people to more effectively manage symptoms and achieve their goals. ADHD coaching provides guidance, support, and psychoeducation to help clients develop practical strategies for success. When ADHD is decreasing your effectiveness in various areas of your life, coaching sessions can help gain understanding and insight about the ways neurodivergence impacts daily functioning, helping you recognize the limitations and strengths that come with ADHD. Coaching helps you learn behavioral strategies and organizational systems, such as time blocking, that help you prioritize. Implementing the practical strategies with the support of a coach will alleviate pressure by instilling confidence that you have the skills to be effective each day.. An ADHD coach can also work with family members to help them understand and support their loved one.

The Three Types of ADHD
Combined Inattentive and Hyperactive/Impulsive Type ADHD:
People with this type of ADHD tend to predominately feel more energy in their body, experience restlessness and the need to be “on the go”; and have difficulty sitting or standing still and waiting. Often they may say or do things impulsively blurt out answers or interrupt others in conversation.
Hyperactive/Impulsive Type ADHD:
People with inattentive type of ADHD struggle primarily with getting started on tasks, staying organized, staying on-task, forgetfulness, loss of time, difficulty managing emotions, and zoning out.
Inattentive Type ADHD:
A combination of both types with equal presentation of each.

ADHD Therapy in Denver: FAQs
-
The 30% rule in ADHD refers to Russell Barkley’s theory that the executive delay people with ADHD experience makes their “executive age” 30% behind their biological age. For example, this means that if you’re a 30 year old adult, you have the average executive ability of a 20 year old adolescent. This has nothing to do with intelligence, but rather self-regulation and cognitive maturity.

A licensed therapist with specialty in ADHD and understanding of neurodivergence is important for a good therapeutic relationship that leads to successful treatment outcomes. For medication you will need a psychiatrist, while a therapist can help you through emotional challenges and skill development.

The 20-minute rule for ADHD is a strategy to help with procrastination behaviors and feelings of overwhelm. By committing to a task for just 20 minutes, it can feel more manageable. It is encouraged to take a break after 20 minutes, or you can choose to continue, but the initial 20 minute commitment is designed to be short enough to overcome "task paralysis.” It's a strategy for building momentum and consistency through achievable wins.

The best kind of therapy for adult ADHD is one that works for you. You may want to consider seeking help that combines coping and self regulation skills with feeling seen, heard and understood by your provider. This is especially important for women with ADHD who commonly find themselves masking in life situations. At The Consultation Room we take an interpersonal approach that combines CBT, mindfulness, somatics, movement, art and creativity.
